Okafor Dominates

CHICAGO --- It was an absolutely dominant performance for Jahlil Okafor at the Elite Classic. The Chicago (Ill.) Whitney Young center had a double-double in a winning effort and proved to be the top 2014 low post player in the country.

A lot was made going into the game between Whitney Young and Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha Catholic about the battle between Okafor and BeeJay Anya. Well, it turned out to be mostly a mismatch, as Okafor got Anya in foul trouble and completely took over the game.

"It was fun," said Okafor of going up against the highly touted 2013 center. "Beejay is like my big brother. We were both on Team USA, and I have known him since I was a freshman. We always talk. There was a lot of trash talking before the game so it was a lot of fun."

Numerous schools have made their way to the Windy City to check in on Okafor recently.

"In our open gym pretty much all of the colleges I have seen at least once," said Okafor. "(John) Calipari came out, Coach K, Louisville, North Carolina came but Roy Williams had his surgery so he called and told me he wanted to be out there but he couldn't because of that, and a lot of other coaches have come out as well."

At the Chicago Elite Classic sitting front and center was Michigan State head man Tom Izzo. Michigan State has been linked quite a bit with Okafor, and he says that the Spartans head man made a big impression from the beginning.

"I have a great relationship with Coach Izzo," said Okafor. "Since my freshman year I have been talking to him and I remember he came out to the school and he met some of my friends who are regular students at the school who were big fans of him. He was real nice to them and that made a big impression on me."

When it comes to North Carolina and Duke, the two schools have the tradition that clearly stands out to Okafor.

"Just the rich tradition of both schools with Coach K, Roy Williams, the national championships, and great players throughout the years, those are two schools I will always be looking at," said Okafor.

For now, though, his attention isn't on recruiting, it is on getting better and winning a state title.

"My focus is on the high school team right now I don't have any trips planned," said Okafor.
