Okafor talks recruiting

Jahlil Okafor

Things remain busy for Jahlil Okafor on the recruiting trail as he continues to dominate on the court.

Five-star center Jahlil Okafor from Chicago (Ill.) Whitney Young is clearly making a run for the top spot in the 2014 class. The 6-foot-9 center has been absolutely dominant this season, and his recruitment continues to be one of the busiest in the country.

Last year Whitney Young had all the talent in the world but struggled. This year that hasn't been the case at all. Led by Okafor the Dolphins are one of the top teams in the country and are putting on a show every time they step out on to the floor.

"I think our chemistry is much better," said Okafor. "We all love playing on the same court. Half the battle is liking your teammates and we like each other a lot, and it shows on the court."

He continued, "My focus has been on being a vocal leader. With me being a junior and having played on varsity since my freshman year I am just trying to lead these guys. We are just all on a mission right now."

Recruiting wise schools such as Duke, North Carolina, Ohio State, Louisville, Michigan State, Kentucky, and a host of others continue to stay in touch with Okafor who says things remain crazy.

"It is really crazy," said Okafor of his recruitment. "I usually have the colleges call my dad and not me so I can just focus on the season."

One school that has been especially active is Ohio State. The Buckeye coaches have made him a top priority, and also Okafor has a close relationship with former Ohio State star Jared Sullinger.

"I like Ohio State they have been coming at me for a while," said Okafor. "Jared is like my big brother. He is someone I can call when I need advice. He lets me know about Ohio State and how they helped him. I just like what Ohio State does with their post players."

Ohio State's Big Ten rival Michigan State is another school that has been right in it from the very beginning.

"I love Coach (Tom) Izzo," said Okafor. "He was one of the first coaches to call me and he has been recruiting me since like eighth grade or my freshman year. I just love that they are in the Big Ten, and also I am cool with Draymond Green who told me about the school. Coach Izzo is just a great coach that I would want to play for."

The current top team in the polls, Duke, has done an excellent job recruiting Okafor and he says the play of Mason Plumlee has opened his eyes even more.

"Right now they are the No. 1 team in the country and seeing how dominant Plumlee is right now, it kills all of the rumors about Duke not using their big men," said Okafor. "It is great to see that, and Coach K, he just speaks for himself."

In West Virginia at the Cancer Research Classic the Kentucky Wildcats also made sure to be front and center watching Okafor, and he says that situation could be a good one for him.

"Kentucky speaks for itself and they help a lot of kids reach their goal of getting to the NBA," said Okafor. "That is my dream goal and I know if I went to Kentucky they could help me reach that goal."

At the moment Okafor could take official visits to schools, but he says right now that isn't even being discussed.

"Right now I just want to finish out this high school season and win a state title, and then I will worry about all of the recruiting stuff," Okafor explained.
