Turner Surprised by Illini Offer

Sacred Heart Griffin (Ill.) junior receiver Malik Turner thought it may take longer for offers to come. He thought wrong as Illinois became his first one this week.

When Illinois offered Sacred Heart Griffin junior Malik Turner earlier this week, it was a pleasant surprise for the 6'2, 190-lb wide receiver, and one he won't soon forget.

"It was unexpected when it was brought to me because I had suffered an injury, I broke my ankle the beginning of my junior year before the season, and I didn't think colleges would take the step in offering me. It felt really good."

The injury is now fully healed and the Illini staff had seen Turner in person over the summer at their camp and coupled with the available tape, felt comfortable with offering him.

"Coach said he watched the little film I did have, and they liked me at camp and they liked what people said about me as a person, that I'm a good kid and all that."

Slated to attend last weekend's junior day, Turner did not make the trip, but he does still feel like he has a good relationship with the staff in Champaign.

"Unfortunately I didn't go down to junior day because I had a basketball game, but I still talked to a couple coaches. I feel comfortable with Coach Golesh and Coach Gonzalez. I'm very comfortable talking to him because he's my position coach."

Currently Turner reports additional interest from Michigan State, Northwestern and Iowa. He does not have any visits planned at this time.
